Lesson Title:

The Napping House

Lesson Author:

Yvette Johnson

Grade Level:

Library Media Center K-2

Subject Area:

Language Arts

Time Allotted for the Lesson:

This will be done with multiple classes because of a flexible scheduling in the library. Classes are held for forty minutes. This lesson will be done for four library session.

Short Description of Lesson:

During this lesson, children "wonder" when interacting with text. Instead of predicting what comes next in the story, students use their imaginations to wonder about what might happen. They create their own wondering multimedia slide about a new text. This is a great way to encourage creativity.

Classroom Layout and Grouping of Students:

This lesson will be done in the Library Media Center. The class will be in the whole group area. Children will be placed into a circle so most the activities can be viewed by all. The media center has seven computers. The classes will be broken into two groups. One will work with the assistant on choosing books appropriate and the other group will be broken into groups to work with the computers.

Student’s Present level of Performance and Knowledge:

They will have prior knowledge because I would do this activity later in the school. They would have already been exposed to Kidspiration. Also they would be more proficient in making books with groups.

Instructional Procedures

1.      Lesson Set:

I would show the children a leaf and I would ask them this question, “What do you know about this leaf?” I would make a chart of their responses. Then I change the question and ask them, “I wonder where this leaf came from?” All responses will be recorded.

2.  Techniques and Activities:

1.) Assemble children into small group. Ask students to describe what they think wondering is. Tell students what it means to wonder.
Model "wondering" using a paper bag with 1 item placed in it. Show them the bag and tell them that there is one item in it. Point to the "I wonder..." sentence strip and begin by saying, "I wonder if the object in the bag is a ball."
Allow each child a chance to "wonder". Point to sentence strip when needed as a prompt.

2.) Next, allow each student to reach into the bag, feel the object, and "wonder" again.

3.) Tell students that they are going to listen to the book The Napping House. Pause and model "wondering". Example: "I'm wondering why it is called The Napping House. "I'm wondering if the ho

use is sleeping."

4.) Stop after each page and let students practice "wondering". Try to allow each student a chance to "wonder" before going back to students who have participated. If a child tries to get into predicting then point to sentence strip to get them back on track.

5.) After the book is finished, allow each student to choose a book that he/she has not read. Ask students not to open the book. Have them use the template to type a sentence about what they "wonder" about their new books by looking at the cover and the title.

6.) Have students read their books, then let each student present their slide about what they wondered and then have them share what their book was actually about.

*7.)  This will be a school wide wiki where each class in the school will post a comment or even change the story. It will build upon itself. The school is broken down into Kindergarten, First Grade and Second Grade. This acitvity will be the responsible by each teacher. If the teacher doesn't have time she can submit it to Mrs. Johnson, the LMS, to post. Postings will be shared during each classes scheduled library time.

I will begin the wiki posting and the class who would like to start may begin. The students were read the book "The Napping House" by Audrey Wood. They were ask to wonder what would happen next in the book.  But we are going to choose another book to practice wondering. The book "The Doorbell Rings" by Pat Hutchins

The children will be evaluated for participating as a collaborator with their classmates. The following rubrics will be used:

The children will be evaluated for participating as a collaborator with their classmates. The following rubrics will be used:

*The classes at Coosada will participate in a school-wide blog. Click on the link and follow the directions on what to do. http://thenappinghouse.pbwiki.com/

*The LMC is a great place to tell how the classes are doing with the blog. The blog also includes a group of children singing The Napping House story. http://yjohnsonthenappinghouse.blogspot.com/

*The LMC has created a podcast of the reading of The Doorbell Rang by Pat Hutchins. http://yvettej2.podomatic.com/

3.   Lesson Closure:

Children will have to present their slides and books to the class at the end of the lesson. The children’s work will also be featured by using the school’s website.

Adaptations for Special Learners:

  1. Use cooperative learning strategies when appropriate

  2. Assign a peer helper to check understanding of directions

  3. Assign a peer helper to read important directions and essential information

  4. Assign a peer tutor to record material dictated by the student

  5. Other

The teachers with children who have IEP’s will need to be interviewed to add to the above list. Since this information is confidential.

Supplemental Activities: Extension and remediation:

Ask the teacher if the children may come in small groups so that I may work with those children who are having a hard time with the whole group.

Assessment/Evaluation:

The teacher will assess class participation and responses to check for understanding during the read aloud.
The teacher will assess students’ multimedia slides for understanding of the concept of wondering.

Student Products:

Kidspiration presentation and create a book with their group.

Assistive Technology Component

This activity will be adaptive to the Multi-Needs and the Special needs students here. The teachers can pull up the blog and the podcast to let the children hear the stories (Electronic books).  The LMC will provide the teachers with Voice recognition software so that the children can place the comments of what they came up with for the blog activity. The multi needs unit has some very severe cases so we will let them use headphones to hear the stories being read and performed. The use of Screen magnifier (mounted over screen), Screen reader, and Classroom amplification.
