Wall Maps
Advantages:
- Provides a visual for students when discussing geography or history
- The map is on the wall for more than two people to see at a time
- Can be referred to very quickly while teaching a lesson
- The spellings of cities, states, countries, etc are on the map
- The map provides a multitude of information at one time
- Can be purchased at a wide range of prices
- The map can be used to teach a variety of concepts (map key, scale, direction, latitude, longitude)
Disadvantages:
- Have a place to hang the map (takes up space)
- Difficult to see the writing from a distance
- Maps in general go out of date quickly
- You would still need to make copies of a map for use in a group setting
Implications for Collection Development
A wall map should be easily accessible for students to observe and for the teacher to reference to while teaching. Monies should be set aside to update the map collection due to the frequent changes.
Copyright Considerations
A wall map is usually copyrighted by the copy that produced it.
