Textbooks
Advantages:
- The us usually a teacher’s edition for the teacher to use for guidance or ideas
- The textbook is set up in a sequence, but can be easily altered
- The teacher an always add to the lessons
- A textbook is usually evaluated on many different levels therefore it has been reviewed for accuracy
- Student can learn how to use a glossary, index, table of contents
- Offers reading on different genres of reading
- Is a great place for a new teacher to start with as a base for lesson ideas
- Can be paced on an individual level
Disadvantages:
- Teacher can get stuck in a rut and not use creative idea therefore not engaged their students
- Does not lend itself to exploration
- When it is adopted it will usually be used for several years and then become outdated or wore
- Space is an issue
- Students get bored with the textbook
Implications for Collection Development
In some school the media specialist can be responsible for textbooks on many different levels (inventory, organization, distribution). The media specialist must be aware of the content of the textbooks within the school for collaboration etc. The media specialist can also offer suggestions of resources that might work well with the textbook.

Making copies of any consumable part of the textbook collection is not allowed.
