Super3 Inquiry Model

I.                   Developer
·        Michael B. Eisenberg and Robert E. Berkowitz, the creators of the Big6, developed the Super 3 for primary students.

II.                Definition
·        The Super3 is a scaled-down version of the Big6 skills. The Super3 has been modified to be used with primary students so that they can also focus on a systemic approach to problem-solving across the curriculum.

III.             Component Parts
·        There are three parts to the Super3. They include:
1) Plan
·        What am I supposed to do?
·        What will the result look like if I do a really good job?
·        What do I need to make to show what I learned?
·        What do I need to find out about in order to do the job?
2) Do
·        How can I do the job?
·        What can I use to find what I need?
·        Now I need to make something to show what I learned!
3) Review
·        Is my job done?
·        Did I do what I was supposed to do?
·        Do I feel OK about this?
·        Should I do something before I turn it in?

IV.              Advantages and Disadvantages

iv.      Helps younger students recognize what they are doing so they can label and talk about their research
                                                             v.      Provides a process model so students can be successful at their tasks
vi.      Allows students to learn transferable planning and organizational skills that they will use for their lifetime

·        Disadvantages
                                                               i.      I have not found or can think of any disadvantages for using this model with elementary-age students.

V.                 Implications for the Library Media Center

·        The Super3 allows library media specialists to expand teaching research skills to the primary students and provides an easy transition to teaching the Big6 skills as they become older.
·        The Super3 promotes collaboration between library media specialist and teachers as it is a process model that is used across all curriculums.
·        The Super3 allows information literacy skills and content to be taught together, reinforcing ideas and not allowing skills to be taught in isolation.
·        The Super3 helps library media specialists teach younger students about research and reference materials in a fun way.
