Paperback books or softcover books are describe as a book that is bind by paper or cardboard and that are usually held together with glue rather than stitches or staples. There are some advantages and disadvantages in having paperback books in a library. These advantages include:
Advantages

·         Paperback books are inexpensive books
·         They also use inexpensive paper to print the books

Disadvantages
·         High postage cost
·         Hard to copy or share selected
·         Easily damaged

Implications for Collection Development

Paperback editions of books are issued when a company decides to release a book in a low cost format. Also, paperback books can be the preferred medium when a book is not expected to be a major seller, or in other situations where the publisher wishes to release a book without putting forth a large investment. Thus, many modern books, especially genre fiction, are first editions in paperback books. Most paperback books titles appeal to some users more than it would in hardback books.

Copyright considerations of the format

If the book is a paperback, please check the copyright page carefully to see if it contains information indicating that the paperback was published by arrangement with another publisher. In most cases you will need to apply to the original hardcover publisher for permission.
