Scavenge the Stacks Using Athena

 

Introduction to the Library Media Center Automation System: Athena

 

 

K-5 grade students

All Subject Areas

 

 

This lesson will be in collaboration with all teachers and subject levels.  This lesson will be taught during the first few weeks of school when all students are allowed the opportunity to visit the library media center for orientation.

 

 

Purpose:  The purpose of this lesson is to introduce the students to the Library Media Center Automation System: Athena

 

 

Objectives: 

The students will be able to:

-identify the library media center automation system: Athena

-use Athena.

-locate books and resources within the Library Media Center using Athena.

-participate in a scavenger hunt using Athena. 

 

 

National Literacy Standard: 

The student who is information literate accesses information efficiently and effectively by developing and using successful strategies for locating information. 

 

 

Resources and Materials: 

Online computers

Athena

Worksheets/handouts

 

 

Procedure:

1.  Introduce the students to the library and allow them time to browse.

2.  Introduce the students to the Library Media Center Automation System: Athena.

3.  Have the students do a couple of practice searches using Athena.

4.  Give the students the "Scavenge the Stacks Using Athena" Worksheet.

5.  Allow the students enough time to complete the worksheet.

6.  Collect the completed worksheets.

7.  Have the students discuss as a class the benefits of Athena.
