Cruising the Online Card Catalog
Purpose: To review information and learn to use Athena’s Online Card Catalog.
Level: Grade 3-5
Content Objectives:
Language Arts: 11. Use search strategies in the research process to identify
reliable current resources and computer technology to locate information.
Information Literacy Objectives:
Principle 6: The library media program encourages and engages students in
reading, viewing, and listening for understanding and enjoyment.
Principle 7: The library media program supports the learning of all students
and other members of the learning community who have diverse learning
abilities, styles, and needs.
Principle 9: The library media program integrates the uses of technology for
learning and teaching.
Technology Objectives:
14. Use the Internet to locate information.
15. Determine appropriate keywords for finding information using a web
search.
17. Relate search results to class or individual assignments.
Methodology:
Materials: pencils, practice worksheet, and shelf markers
Equipment: LCD projector, screen, computer lab
Procedures:
1. Introduction: Explain to students that they are going to learn how to search for
library materials such as; books, videos, audio books, and etc. using the
library’s automation software.
2. Using the LCD projector, demonstrate how to use the search option in Athena.
Explain each part of the search option.
3. Give students the practice worksheet. Using the practice sheet, students will
search topics and answer questions using Athena.
4. Students will follow the following steps to search for their material:
Ø On the Quick Search screen, type a search term in the box at the top of the screen.
Ø Click Search or press Enter
Ø Depending on the type of search you wish to perform, click the Author, Title, or Subject button located on the right side of screen.
5. Give each student a shelf marker of different colors. During the activity , students will use the
marker to locate and mark books on the shelf.
6. Student’s practice sheet will be assessed for understanding.
7. Accommodation: Students with special needs will work with a partner to take assessments.
