ATHENA AUTOMATION SYSTEM

All Montgomery Public Schools in Montgomery, Alabama use the Athena library automation system.  This system combines circulation, inventory, cataloging and searching.  This system is no longer available for purchase however Follett Software Company continues to support current customers. 

Follett Software Company suggests Destiny Library Manager as the new library automation system solution. 

I conducted an interview with Library Media Specialist, Mrs. Patsy Jeffcoat in order to answer a few questions about the Athena automation system.  Mrs. Jeffcoat is the LMS at Robert E. Lee High School in Montgomery, Alabama.  She works with students in grades 10th - 12th ranging in age from 15 - 21. 

Terms you should know:

*Automated library system- an information and communications technology that interacts with users to perform specific tasks and uses technology to support and enhance library functions.

*Aquisition- the act of gaining or acquiring possession 

*zMARC- is a unique tool developed to assist libraries in the bulk retrieval of MARC records

*Dewey Decimal Classification system- world's most widely used library classification system
