I . Developer

 

The REACTS model was originally devised by two high school library media specialists, Barbara K. Stripling and Judy M. Pitts, for use by students engaged in researching and writing term papers.

 

II. Definition

The REACTS Taxonomy focuses on critical thinking in the research process. This model focuses on strategies for ensuring high level thinking and resulting quality products.

 

III. Components

 

The REACTS Taxonomy includes the following components:

 

  • Recalling- recalling and reporting the main facts
  • Explaning- recalling and restating, summarizing and paraphrasing information
  • Analyzing- breaking subjects into components
  • Challenging- making critical judgements about subject based on internal and external standards
  • Transforming- bringing together more than one piece of information, forming conclusion, and presenting the conclusion
  • Synthesizing- creating an entirely original product based on new concept and or theory

 

IV. Advantages and Disadvantages

Advantages:

  • Help students develop cognitive creativity and critical thinking skills.
  • Improved research or writing term papers for high school students.
  • Studnets seek a variety of library resources  and create reports on what they find.
  • Students create specific questions. (Who?, What?, When?, Why? and Where?)
  • Express information in their own words.
  • Reflective aspect
  • Criticl thinking

Disadvantages:

  • Not suitable for grades K-6.

 

V.  Implications for the Library Media Center

 

  • REACTS help students to becoming critical thinkers.
  • Specific information on a topic in one or variety of library sources and create reports on the basis of what they find.
  • Asking and Searching information.
  • Understanding of the information process.
