Hi My name is Holley Tullis but most of my students call me Mz. T. Some of my other aliases are Lady LB "Li-Brary," or "The Library Diva," cause I'm all about the library or ways to make it better. I also try to keep the library "cool " for my teen patrons. Currently I am the LMS at Hillcrest High School in Evergreen, AL. I serve 9-12th grade rural students who have had little or no exposure to libraries, school or public. I also teach yearbook/journalism and library literacy. When I have TIME to do library work I enjoy the challenge-- I say challenge because most of our students haven't had any exposure to the library and the joys that it can offer. If society allows kids to continue non-learning in this manner--there will be serious, societial, cultural, and economical problems for our communities, states, and nations. Therefore, I started re-doing the library in order to make the enviornment more teen-friendly and inviting (I call this lil project "Generation Renovation"). In addition, I try to teach them that the library is for more THAN READING--that the journey is about become LITERATE !!, specifically INFORMATION LITERATE--but for those students who consider themselves readers (A RARE TREAT IN HIGH SCHOOL !!)--then I do try to cater to their likes and dislikes--especially teens (the lowest reading group AND the hardest to reach) according to statistics quoted in To Read or Not To Read: A Question of National Consequence: Executive Summary. (2008, September). Arts Education Policy Review.
* Peruse the summary for yourself-- You would be shocked at the Reading Results of our country! http://www.gpee.org/General.56.0.html
* This page provides a link to the document--you have to scroll almost all the way to the bottom and click on the title-- you may then download it as a pdf document.
