     There are many types of professional organizations I feel can be beneficial to the school library media specialist. Also, I feel that these organizations can be helpful in the professional development of school library media specialists. The following are the ten organizations I chose:

   

 

1.      ALS DE-Alabama State Department of Education (Montgomery, AL)-

            Individuals who apply to the Alabama Department of Education, Teacher Education and    

            Certification Office, for Alabama professional educator certificates or for alternative and   

             preliminary certificates under any of the conditions described in "Test Candidates

             opportunities offered by the organization (PD): Standards-49(2)(a)4,5,11,12,18

 

2.      (INTASC)- Interstate New Teacher Assessment and Support Consortium-This organization has worked with states and districts in developing a set of standards by which new teachers should be measured. Most states have adopted these standards in training, assessing, and monitoring new teachers in their first few years of teaching.

3.      (ALA) American Library Association - provides leadership for the development, promotion, and improvement of library and information services and the profession of librarianship in order to enhance learning and ensure access to information for all. 4.      (AASL)-American Association of School Librarians-Accordingly, this organization of American Association of School Librarians is to advocate excellence, facilitate change, and develop leaders in the school library media field. 5.      (ALSC)- Association for Library Service to Children - A division of the American Library Association whose mission is to support the profession of children's librarianship by enabling and encouraging its practitioners to provide the best library services to our nation's children.

6.      (YALSA)- Young Adult Library Association advocate, promote and strengthen service to    young adults as part of the continuum of total library service, and to support those who provide service to this population.

7.      (LSTA)- Library Services Technology Act -It is the only federal program .The purpose of it is to links libraries electronically and helps provide users access to information through state, regional, national, and international networks. In many states, the state library network provides enriched content databases for information access to all in the state. LSTA was reauthorized as part of the Museum and Library Services Act of 2003 (H.R. 13) and signed by the President on September 25, 2003 (P.L. 108-81). LSTA is up for reauthorization in 2009. Federal resources help target library services to people of diverse geographic, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds, to individuals with disabilities, and to people with limited literacy skills.

8.      (NBC) -National Board Certification (pp. 170-176)- Discuss the advantages of acquiring national board certification in your position as a library media specialist. Certification provides opportunities to enhance your career success through job advancement. This will strengthen you as a professional. To add, it is helpful to build college credits. These credits can be used for professional development. In a certification conference, you can receive the benefit of annual state-of-the-art education and networking with other professionals in the administrative field. National Board Certification, offered by the National Board For Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS), is a way to recognize the accomplished teaching that is occurring in Alabama’s classrooms. The certification process is based on high and rigorous standards that evaluates teaching practice through performance-based assessments, which the ultimate result is improved performance and achievement.

9.      (LAMA)-Library Administration and Management Association- A division of the American Library Association that provides an organizational framework for encouraging the study of administrative theory, for improving the practice of administration in libraries and for identifying and fostering administrative skill.

10.  (YALSA)-Young Adult Library Services Association

A division of the American Library Association that advocates extensive and developmentally appropriate library and information services for young adults, ages 12-18. The Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA) is the fastest growing division of the American Library Association (ALA). For over 50 years YALSA has been the world leader in recommending reading, listening and viewing for teens.

11.   (ALAOIF)-ALA Office of Intellectual Freedom

The goal of the office is to educate librarians and the general public about the nature and importance of intellectual freedom in libraries. Online publications include the Library Bill of Rights, Intellectual Freedom Policies and Guidelines and information about frequently challenged library materials. Mission. Established December 1, 1967, the Office for Intellectual Freedom is charged with implementing ALA policies. The 10 standards are: Content Pedagogy, Student Development, Diverse Learners, Multiple Instructional Strategies, Motivation and Management, Communication and Technology, Planning, Assessment, Reflective Practice: Professional Growth , and School and Community Involvement
