Media Formats “Newspapers and Periodicals.”
Newspapers are a publication, usually issued daily or weekly, containing current news, editorials, and feature articles.
Periodicals are publications that are published on a regular basis. Newspapers and periodicals draw people into the library media center.
Advantages:
· Offer information that is current
· Can be used for research
· Popular magazines draw people into the library who may otherwise not visit the library
· Online Newspapers allow for more than one reader to access the newspaper
· Magazines often have educational games or activities
· Magazines often request their readers submit questions or original works or writing or art
· Provide a broad range of ideas and information that students might not be exposed to through the regular curriculum
Disadvantages:
· Online newspapers an be expensive
· Materials may not be appropriate for all grades
· Parts or all of the paper are easily misplaced or lost
· Storage for newspapers can be difficult
· Only one reader can access a newspaper at a time
· Magazines are easily destroyed
· Magazines may be removed from the LMC
· Games and puzzles may tempt patrons to damage the materials
Implications for collection and development:
Online newspapers are more appropriate for secondary schools. Elementary schools should have access to at least one local newspaper. Use and cost are key factors in deciding whether or not to add periodicals to the collection.
Copyright considerations:
A teacher can copy a chart, graph, diagram, cartoon, picture or article from a paper for instructional use. A copyright warning notice should appear on each copy. Online journals that require subscriptions are subject to licensing agreements.
*Word limits for multiple copies: 250 words for poetry, 2,500 words for articles.
