I. Developer:

a. FLIP it! was first developed in 1988 with a 7th grade class by Alice H. Yucht.

 

II. Define:

a. Flip it! is a generic problem solving model for student research.

b. It can be used for school activities and research or in decision making.

c. Flip it! has five steps, the last being the “IT” which will be used though out the strategy.

d. Flip it! uses a four box worksheet.

 

III. Component parts:

a. Focus - guideposts for the quest I'm on (specifying)

b. Links - connections to help me proceed (strategizing)

c. Input - implementing the information I find (sorting, sifting, storing)

d. Payoff - putting it all together for a profitable solution (solving, showing, sharing)

e. IT! - Have I demonstrated Intelligent Thinking throughout the process? And “If I know…then I should…”

 

 

IV. Advantages and disadvantages:

 

Advantages:

a. This strategy can be used for any topic the researcher/decision maker requires (school related or real world.)

b. Learner centered.

C. Uses prior knowledge.

D. Promotes information literacy skills.

C. Promotes life long decision making/problem solving skills.

E. The acronym is easy to remember.

 

Disadvantages:

I could not find any disadvantages to Flip it!

 

V. Implications for the library media center:

a. Students can be exposed to the link between information literacy skills and life skills using Flip it!

b. Flip it! can be used to promote collaboration with students and teachers as it can be used to research any topic.

c. Library media specialist can use Flip it! as a tool to integrate information literacy skills with the curriculum of the school.
