Page history last edited by Jennifer 2 years, 10 months ago

Media Formats “Blocks.”

Construction toys usually made out of wood but can be made out of other materials. Allow students to learn using their senses. Playing with blocks encourages cooperation and social development.  Blocks also strengthen coordination.

Advantages:

·      Writing activities can be created from play with blocks

·      Encourages critical thinking

·      Encourages students to come to the library who otherwise may not

·      Encourages parents of younger children to visit the library

·      Can be a pathway to books on topics that occur during play

Disadvantages:

·      Blocks can be dangerous if used inappropriately

·      Blocks can be expensive

·      Block play can be loud

Implications for collection and development:

The library media specialist should consider students developmental level when considering adding blocks to the collection. Cost is a factor in deciding whether to add blocks to the collection. Blocks can be expensive and a large set would be needed to accommodate small group play.

Copyright considerations:

There are no copyright restrictions for blocks.
