Irving's Research Model

Page history last edited by Tonja Hunter 3 years, 2 months ago

Developer of the model

Ann Irving, an English developer developed a nine-step model for elementary school students.  Assignments range from simple to complex.

Definition of Model

In 1985, Ann Irving discussed cross-curriculum connections in a book titled Study and Information Skills Across the Curriculum Irving stressed a resource-based learning approach that addressed individual differences in teaching and learning styles.  She also emphasized the importance of collaboration between librarians, teachers, and students.

Components of Model

§ Formulating

§ Identifying

§ Tracing

§ Examining

§ Using

§ Recording

§ Interpreting

§ Shaping

§ Evaluating

Advantage

An advantage of this model is that it is an intellectual concept that asks students to organize notes that will enhance learning by interpreting, reflecting, analyzing, and synthesizing.

Disadvantage

One advantage is that it is a time consuming model for individuals with learning disabilities.

Implications of library media center

Librarians integrate technology to assess and evaluate learning.  This improves professional practice and decision-making for maximizing student potential.  It is imperative for all educators to assess and manage content area learning to increase competency level of all students.  Administrators, faculty, and staff should collaborate with librarians to promote information literacy in professional learning communities.
