Narrative for Technology In-Service
Meet Em…Where They’re At!
No longer are we dealing with students who are quiet, docile, and just willing to do their homework…We are dealing with Generation X-
-
Vocal
-
Have a WHY mentality
-
Want Authentic Relevant Activities
-
Keep some form of technology on them-I’Pods, MP 3 Players, Game Boys, Digital Cams, Camera Phones, Bluetooth…
Today’s students are technology savvy—which is why we need Web 2.0 tools for this 21st Century learner. “Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once he grows up.” The challenge is students don’t have direction in how to use them in a meaningful way. As educators we can tap into the tools students are using to help them become empowered and to take ownership of their own learning. Most of these Web 2.0 tools work in
concert with each other.
Students need the opportunity to contribute to our society in a meaningful, authentic, relevant, connected way. Using Web 2.0 tools facilitates collaboration, self-directed learning, and provides an opportunity to share with a global audience. We must ask our students: “What do you have to say?” Then, use these tools to enable them to say it!
Activities:
I will go around personally and invite each teacher to a professional development workshop and give each teacher a spiel about it. I will follow up with a flyer placed in everyone’s mail box and an e-mail.
*I would also hope to ask the principal in advance for permission to present as a professional development opportunity when if and when the schedule will allow it.
Activity one: Taking pictures and editing them according to a theme.
Materials needed:
Digital camera(s)
Computer lab or laptops with photo editing software already installed on them
Flashdrives
LCD Projector and Presentation Board or Smartboard
Glogster Access-www.glogster.com
Pbwiki access- http://pbworks.com/
I will go over the power point presentation first and answer any questions/concerns.
Next, I will have teachers partner up (in groups of two or three) and take pictures of each other. Next we will up-load the pictures and edit them according to a theme—(depending on the ability of the group). I could give an easy theme like, Let’s Go Crazy. I would show teachers how to use software in order to warp themselves; add silly stickers, silly words, etc.
Once teachers had gotten the hang of editing photos, I would give 2 more theme related photo-editing assignments (if time allowed).
I would also have a hand-out which would have this information typed up as well that teachers could refer back to if needed.
Activity two: Creating/Editing/Posting and linking on Glogster
Materials needed:
Glogster http:/www.glogster.com/
Computer lab
Flashdrives
LCD Projector and Presentation Board or Smartboard
Once teachers had completed the project, I would have them log on to Glogster.com and then create their own glogster account poster pages (reminding them to choose the educational choice and mark private). I would go over each of the components with them and then allow them to practice and create their own page. When I was satisfied with their level of completion then I would show teachers how to up-load their photos, paste them on glogster and add tags to them.
I would also have a hand-out which would have this information typed up as well that teachers could refer back to if needed.
I will use a Smart board to demonstrate the steps involved in linking on a wiki. Participants will link pages on their wikis.
Activity three: Creating a new page on the wiki.
Materials needed:
PB Works http://pbworks.com
Computer lab
LCD Projector
I will use a Smart board to demonstrate the steps involved in creating a new page on the wiki. Participants will create a new page on their wikis.
I would also have a hand-out which would have this information typed up as well that teachers could refer back to if needed.
Handouts:
Participants will receive a printed copy of the PowerPoint presentation and a sheet of directives for taking pictures, editing photos (according to the software program that I have selected). In addition, I will type up a hand-out of how to set up their Glogster pages and how to set up Pbwiki accounts. Participants can refer to the printed copy of the handouts during the presentation and as a reference source for future work with Glogster or Pbwiki.
