Applying Selection Criteria
Assignment # 7

I attended the IRA conference in Atlanta, Georgia and the Alabama Expo (LAMP) this year. I personally examined the 2008 publications listed and bought them for my personal library. As a part of this assignment, I looked up the books on the Barnes and Nobles URL to read the reviews.  My intention is to include them as a part of the school’s library collection.

The author, James Rumford, eloquently depicts the life of Ali, a child living in Baghdad, during the time of the current Iraq war.   Ali has learned to appreciate the ancient art of calligraphy. He somehow manages to write while the bombs are exploding around him. This book is excellent for helping children to better understand what they see and hear on the news. It also gives them an in-depth look at what children in war torn countries do in time of turmoil. It teaches children survival skills amidst chaos. I believe that children at J. S. Abrams Elementary School need to have more exposure to the real world through books. This is one I recommend for my school’s library.

New Publication # 2

See How They Run: Campaign Dreams, Election Schemes, and the Race to the White House
Authors: Susan E. Goodman and Elwood H. Smith
Copyright 2008
Publisher: Bloomsbury U. S. A. Children’s Books, New York, New York

Selection Criteria
  1. Appropriate for Recommended Levels
  2. Reflective of the pluralistic nature of a global society
  3. Recent copyright date as appropriate to the subject
  4. Appropriate for the age, ability level, learning style, and social and emotional development of the intended user.
  5. Pertinent to the curriculum and the objectives of the instructional program.
Explanation for How the Publication Meets the Criteria

The book is written for children ages 8-12. It is great for helping children to understand the dimensions of the electoral process. They can understand the idea of a “global society” through the electoral process because there are different views of party nominees. The author also provides factual information about previous elections that can be of interest to students and staff as they engage in the electoral process. The information is congruent with what 5th and 6th graders are taught. This 2008 book is most appropriate for children in today’s world, in that the U. S. A. is presently at the tail end of a presidential race.

The writer takes the reader on a journey from the “birth of democracy to the Electoral College, and more”. The teaching staff at J. S. Abrams Elementary School is planning to hold a mock presidential election just before the real presidential election in November. This book provides wonderful information on how to plan and run an election. I find it most appropriate for staff and students, for it can guide them through the process.

Explanation for How the Publication Meets the Criteria

Doctor Ted is great for Kindergarten and first grade students who are encouraged to use their imagination just like Dr. Ted, when they dress up or when they explain what a doctor does. Also, their curriculum supports instruction relative to community workers. The cartoon-like pictures are simplistic and adds to the entertainment and humor for students and other readers.

Book review writers found themselves laughing and having fun over the character’s misdiagnosis of his pretend play patients at home and at school. They laughed at how he attempts to cure them as well. Learning should be a fun experience.   I think this book helps to create a fun way to learn about one of our community helpers.

Explanation for How the Publication Meets the Criteria

This book is suggested for children ages 3-9. As a part of the character education program, it meets curriculum and instructional goals.    The book is especially endearing because of the beautiful illustrations that seem to jump out at the reader. The large print is also great for better reading purposes.

Although “The Ugly Duckling” tale has been around for decades, it still seems to intrigue readers, both young and old. This version written by Stephen Mitchell, is most appropriate for children, who throughout their physical development, need to be reminded that they are unique and different in their own right. I believe this book can assist children at my school who have low self-esteem and need to be reminded how special and unique they are.

Explanation for How the Publication Meets the Criteria

This book especially meets curriculum objectives for 5th and 6th grade students as they study aspects of American History. It is most appropriate when used during black history month. It is also relevant to today’s world in America. While color barriers have been torn down over the years, we as a nation have still further to go. This book provides students with vivid descriptions on how far we have come as a nation. It is appropriate for children 11 years old and up. The book meets quality standards in that it is easy to read and understand, the vocabulary is appropriate and the picture presentations are wonderful.

My interest in this book was immediate, in that the jacket cover portrays the main characters Jane, a Caucasian girl and Mrs. Taylor, an African American lady, involved in a scene common to the civil rights movement. After reading the reviews, I found that the book depicted real life events during the civil rights era. The main characters were living out some of the events of that time. This book is especially appropriate for the time in which we are living. While all races are seeking to unite in this country, this book seems to be designed to help the reader to appreciate all people no matter what color or gender they are. Although my school is majority African American, I believe students need to appreciate those few students who are among our school population. This book can help in bridging the gap.
