Sculpture

Sculptures are any pieces of three dimensional art, that can be in a collection or an individual piece. They can be made of multiple types of materials. And can be various shapes and sizes. Most libraries have one or two small pieces of sculpture for decoration as well as educational purposes.

Advantages

-They have three dimensionality

-Hands on

-Used by multiple classrooms

Disadvantages

-Could be fragile

-Not easy to clean

-Not easy to store

-Expensive

-No where to display it

Implications for Collection Development

Sculptures are a wonderful addition to the library media center if you have the space available and the resources to take care of the piece. However, it is not the most practical acquistion for the library media center. You must take in consideration does it serve an educational purpose. If it does not relate in some to the curriculum you might reconsider purchasing it.
