My name is Carolyn Starkey, and I am an Assistant Professor of Library Education Media at Alabama State University. I joined the faculty at ASU in August of 2006. The classes I teach are online and web-enhanced library media and technology courses. It is a great way to teach and a great way to earn a degree! Instructional design of distance education classes is my new love. I am a big fan of online learning!

I have a varied educational background with Earth and Space Science as my first love. I graduated with a B.S. in Geology from UAB. After five years in the petroleum industry, I returned to UAB and completed a M.A.Ed. in Secondary Education - Earth and Space Science. I have added on Master's level certifications in Gifted Education (UAB) and Library Media (Jacksonville) since that first Master's degree. On May 6th of 2006, I graduated from Alabama State University with my Ed.S. in Library Education Media and started my first Ph.D. class at the University of Alabama (on the same day!). Along the way I picked up a National Board Certification in Library Media. I am very excited to be a part of the Instructional Technology Ph.D. program at UA. As of May of 2008, I have only one class and my dissertation to go! Check out my personal website at

I also have a strong interest in K-12 technology integration. My Ed.S. thesis was entitled "Alabama Virtual Library: Attitudes Toward and Use of the State-Sponsored Digital Library by K-12 Educators in a Rural North Alabama School System." Although I plan to do my Ph.D. dissertation on some facet of online learning, I would like to continue to do some research in this area.
