Amy Brock Newspapers

Page history last edited by PBworks 3 years, 7 months ago

Libraries typically have subscriptions to local newspapers and at least one state or nation newspaper.  Today there are many that are available online for reading which cuts down on the need for subscriptions.

Advantages of newspapers are:

  • Keeping students abreast of current events in their city, state and country.
  • Availability of online access.
  • Having print copies draws students and teachers to the LMC.

Disadvantages of newspapers are:

  • Storage considerations for archiving.
  • The condition of the paper after it has been used by students.
  • Unless multiple copies are ordered only one student can access them at a time.

Implications for Collection Development

Access to newspapers should be conducive to the grade level at the school as to having hard copies available or online subscriptions.  Teacher editions of instructional newspapers may be needed in the LMC if subscribed to by classroom teachers.

Copyright Considerations

Information can be copied for instructional use only.  Word limits are 250 with poetry and 2500 with articles.
