CDs, or compact discs are used to store digital data and began being used in libraries in the middle 1980s.
Some of the advantages of using CDs are:
-
They take up little storage space.
-
They do not wear out as quickly as other forms of multimedia
-
They can hold the same amount of information as several volumes of books
-
Equipment is inexpensive.
Some of the disadvantages of using CDs are:
-
They are easy to scratch.
-
They are small and easy to steal.
-
Newer CD's may not be compatible with older computers which a lot of schools have.
Implications for Collection Development
Consider if you want to circulate CDs that have music and if the music is appropriate for school use. There is so much available that it may be difficult to decide what to purchase. The material may only be popular for a limited time.
Copyright Considerations
Making copies of any sound recording is illegal and it is a good idea to put warnings of this on the CDs that circulate.
